I am delighted to announce that the first Professional of the Month Award goes to a good friend and mentor Mr. Mark Russell - Clinical Lead Ultrasound at Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
I nominated Mark as I thought he was a clear choice for the award as he not only gives his best to the job role but I have personally seen him go above and beyond the call of duty on countless occasions. Many of his patients remember him due to his caring and thorough nature as he often bumps into them from time to time!
Mark has been involved in ultrasound for around 12 years now and undertakes a wide range of examinations including Obstetrics, Gynae (including EPAU), General abdominal and small parts, Vascular (Carotid Dopplers) and neonatal cranial and cardiac scans. His main area of interest is neonatal ultrasound, particularly cranial ultrasound which he lectures at South Bank University.
Mark was happy and graciously accepted the award. He writes
"My job as clinical lead still includes a lot of hands on scanning which I love and also a large amount of teaching, lecturing, mentoring students, writing protocols and attending MDT meetings. CPD is seen as an essential element of all the ultrasound roles in our department and all of the staff regularly take part in presentations, lectures and MDT meetings where patient’s scans, treatment and follow up are discussed. I feel that this helps to motivate us all and keep us up to date with what is going on in the rapidly changing world of ultrasound.
As for the future, I’m strongly considering working for a year in Australia and would really like to see how sonographers work over there. Perhaps I’d get the opportunity to learns some MSK ultrasound which I’d really enjoy. After that who knows but I’d love one day to try and apply for a consultant type role in Ultrasound which I know are few and far between especially with the current climate in the NHS."
